Nelson
Center benefits from McKesson Foundation Grant
April 25, 2006
Denton
- A $12,000 grant from the McKesson Foundation will
be used to create an on-site health clinic for the
residents of the Nelson Childrens Center in
Denton, Texas.
The center,
an affiliated ministry of Lutheran Social Services,
specializes in treating abused, neglected and troubled
boys and girls ages 5 to 16. The children often
have limited medical care prior to arrival at the
center. This grant will allow for the creation of
a clinic and the hiring of a center nurse that will
provide on-site medical care. The Nelson Center
expects to have the clinic up and running this fall
before the next school year starts.
The
McKesson Foundation has been wonderful in providing
help, healing and hope to these children,
said Cheryl Rayl, chief executive officer of the
center. Their local office has been very supportive.
This grant will allow us to provide immunizations
and other basic health care for these very deserving
children.
For 25
years the McKesson Foundation has been committed
to helping children in the communities where the
corporation operates. For the past 10 years McKesson
employees have volunteered at the Nelson Center.
The Nelson Center, which recently celebrated its
10th anniversary, provides its residents with individual
and group therapy, structured activities, and on-site
education through Trinity Charter School. The center
also provides substance abuse education, music therapy,
self esteem building and anger management.
Lutheran
Social Services is the social service arm of The
Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod and the Evangelical
Lutheran Church in America. LSS annually serves
more than 30,000 children, elderly and poor in Texas
and Louisiana regardless of religious beliefs, ethnicity,
gender or age.
