Ryan employees make Christmas bright
for abused, neglected children

Dec. 21, 2007

Denton, Texas - For the 65 children at the Nelson Children's Center, this Christmas may be their best ever, thanks to employees of Dallas-based Ryan, the leading tax service firm in North America. The Nelson Center treats boys and girls, 6 to 15 years old, who have emotional and behavioral problems and a result of past abuse and neglect.

"Several years ago, when Ryan's Community Outreach Committee learned of The Nelson Center, employees eagerly embraced the chance to help, realizing they could make a small difference in the lives of children who are victims of circumstances beyond their control," said Delta Emerson, a vice president with Ryan.

The company employees made sure each Nelson Center resident would have a special surprise on Christmas morning. They stuffed Christmas stockings, on which they wrote each resident's name in glitter, with candy treats and a Christmas card. Then they helped wrap gifts that were donated by individuals and organizations from the community.

"Although we are involved in a variety of worthwhile initiatives, The Nelson Center project is a favorite of our employees," said Emerson. "We deeply respect and appreciate the mission of your (LSS) organization. Thank you for allowing us to partner with you."

The Nelson Children's Center in Denton serves up to 65 children a day, ages 6 to 15, who have been severely abused and neglected. Education is provided at the center by Trinity Charter School. The children receive individual and group therapy and provided structured activities on and off campus. The center also provides substance abuse education, music therapy, self-esteem building and anger management.

The Nelson Center was established in 1995 by Lutheran Social Services.
